BARRO NEGRO

Región: San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca.

Proceso: La arcilla se amasa hasta que se vuelve suave y luego se moldea con la forma que la pieza tomará. Una vez moldeada, se seca a la luz del sol durante cuatro días; posteriormente el artesano realizará cortes en caso de que la pieza lo necesite.

El efecto brillante se logra puliendo la pieza a mano con cristales de cuarzo. Después de rasparse, se deja secar al sol por otros días. Después, la pieza se coloca en un horno (normalmente de leña) por un día. Es durante este proceso donde la cerámica negra adquiere su distintivo color.

Process: The clay is kneaded until smooth and then molded into the shape the piece will take. Once molded, it dries in the sunlight for four days; later the craftsman will make cuts in case the piece needs it.

The brilliant effect is achieved by polishing the piece by hand with quartz crystals. After scraping, it is left to dry in the sun for another few days. Afterwards, the piece is placed in an oven (usually wood-fired) for a day. It is during this process that black pottery acquires its distinctive color.
